Person with knowledge tells AP: Josh McDaniels to return to Pats this season

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) â€" A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Josh McDaniels is expected to be hired by the New England Patriots as an offensive assistant for the rest of the season and will take over as offensive coordinator starting next season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the team hasn't made an announcement. It was first reported by ESPN.com.

The person said McDaniels would work throughout the playoffs with current offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, who was introduced Saturday as Penn State's new head coach. McDaniels was offensive coordinator with the Patriots from 2006 to 2008, then became head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009 until being fired with a 3-9 record in 2010.
