Baron Davis is down after losing ball Tuesday night as Knicks get floored in Chicago, unable to charge past Bulls this time â" unlike two days earlier at Garden â" despite absence of reigning MVP Derrick Rose.
CHICAGO â" Between what happened in Newark and in Miami, but especially here at the United Center, this was an especially bad night for the Knicks, all the way around.
They didnât have to contend with Derrick Rose, which was a gift, even if the Bulls have put up a ridiculous record when they havenât had the reigning MVP this season.
With Rose nursing a sprained ankle and sitting out his 23rd game of the season, the Knicks still couldnât beat the Bulls. To make matters worse, on a night when they fell 98-86, the Knicks saw the Sixers stop their slide with a win over the Nets, while the Celtics went into Miami and tightened their grip on the Atlantic Division lead with a win over the Heat.
The Knicksâ setback doesnât mean that they canât catch the Celtics, although thatâs looking like a long shot now. And it also doesnât mean the Knicks are falling out of the playoff race and the Sixers are making it. But it does put more of an emphasis on their game Wednesday in Milwaukee, which is also vying for a playoff berth and is right on the Knicksâ tail.
âItâs a must-win game for us,â said Tyson Chandler, after the Knicks were pounded on the glass. âWe have to treat it like itâs Game 7 of a playoff series.â
But thatâs exactly how the Knicks should have treated this game. We understand, a lot of teams havenât beaten the Bulls when Rose hasnât been on the floor during his nightmare season. Theyâre now 16-7 without him, which is simply astounding.
Still, when youâve still got big plans for the playoffs and you donât have to contend with one of the NBAâs premier players on his home floor, youâve got to get the game. Somehow. Some way.
âWe struggled all night,â said Mike Woodson. âWe didnât flow into anything. Thatâs the first time Iâve seen that since Iâve been coaching this team. It was like everyone was trying to beat them by themselves.â
They really threw away a great chance here when they scored all of 10 points in the second quarter. Then they couldnât stop the old Piston, Richard Hamilton, in the third period when he went for 18 points and got the Bulls into the fourth leading, 72-62. In the fourth, they never got the Bullsâ lead below eight as they ended up giving guys such as Kyle Korver too many open looks.
Hamilton really won the game for the Bulls, hitting six of 10 shots in the third and looking like he was back in Auburn Hills, filling it up for Larry Brown when the Pistons won it all in 2004. He scored off the drive, which he rarely has done in recent seasons. He didnât have anything left after the third period â" he didnât log a single minute in the fourth â" but it was more than enough for the Bulls.
âThatâs who he is,â said Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau, who has seen Hamilton struggle with injuries in the shooting guardâs first season with the Bulls. âHeâs missed a ton of time. Twenty points in 20 minutes, thatâs outstanding. Now heâs getting used to the contact and the pace of the game.â
The Bulls have played some great basketball without Rose, like the night against Miami when their third-string point guard, John Lucas, made everything he threw up against LeBron James. But then there are times when Roseâs supporting cast is anemic, and Scottie Pippen, sitting six seats down from the Knick bench, looks like a pretty good alternative.
Tuesday was a night when Hamilton and Korver and Roseâs replacement, C.J. Watson, did the job. Fine. But itâs on the Knicks that they didnât get this game when they did not have to contend with Roseâs drives and all-around excellence. They talked about being âflatâ and âundersized.â Hello? Chicago didnât have Rose.
This could end up haunting the Knicks in their quest to get the best possible playoff positioning.
âIâm waiting to hear what they want me to do,â Rose said out on the court about an hour before tipoff.
You knew what the answer would be. The Bulls did the smart thing and sat him down rather than risk having him make the injury worse.
The stakes are high for the Heat game Thursday. It could go a long way to determining whether the Bulls take the No. 1 seed into the playoffs for the second straight season.
First place â" thatâs a long way from where the Knicks find themselves today.
