Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Shaun Marcum will miss Tuesday’s start due to right-elbow tightness.
“His elbow is tight, and we went to throw our bullpen the other day and it was still tight,†Roenicke said. “So he’s not going to make his start tomorrow. (Team physician William) Raasch is going to look at him, and we’ll see where we go from there.â€
Manager Ron Roenicke revealed the information on Monday afternoon in his meet with the media. Marcum was set to pitch against his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays, but obviously, that will no longer happen. I am sure the right-hander is disappointed he will not get a chance to defeat Toronto but it is unfortunately something he will have to live with.
Roenicke did not indicate whom the Brewers would use to replace Marcum in the lineup, as they really do not have a lot of options. The most likely scenario is Milwaukee will use multiple relievers to get through the game.
“We’ll have somebody come in and either start tomorrow, or we’ll do a bullpen session,†Roenicke said. “We’ll know which direction we’re going to go after the game tonight. I don’t know if we’ll announce a personnel move, or who’s going to pitch.â€
Marcum, a victim of Tommy John surgery a couple seasons ago, apparently suffered pain in his right elbow after his last start against the Kansas City Royals on June 14. This is not the first time this year he has had problems with his throwing arm. Marcum had issues with his right shoulder in spring training in which he was forced to miss a few weeks.
“Sometimes pitchers say something, then they go throw their bullpen and it’s gone,†Roenicke said. “And then other times they say, ‘I don’t think it’s much â€" I feel a little something,’ and then all of a sudden it is something. It’s really hard to tell. I never know when a pitcher says that how it’s going to go. It’s either absolutely nothing, or it ends up being a little more than what you think.â€
Roenicke brings up a good point. Pitchers never want to come out of games as they always feel they can get the next better, and they never want to miss starts with a possible injury because they believe they can pitch through it.
This could potentially be a costly injury to a team that has suffered its fair share this season. Marcum is one of the most consistent pitchers on the team, as he has given up more than three earned runs in only one start this season. In 13 starts, he has a 5-3 record with a 3.39 ERA.
