Per a statement issued by Marquette on Friday, assistant coach Scott Monarch has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team and head coach Buzz Williams will serve a one-game suspension following the results of an investigation in response to revelations of a possible rules violation two weeks prior.
According to the university, Monarch, who was entering his fifth year with the Golden Eagles, had provided transportation and team-issued apparel to a prospective recruit, who was not named.
“When I was allowed to review the report earlier this week, I was deeply saddened to learn of an error in judgment of one of my assistants and close friends,†noted Williams in the statement, as reported by jsonline.com. “I take personal responsibility for what happens in this program and realize we must be role models to both our team and the entire university. Our commitment has always been and will always be to operate this program at the highest level of integrity in the Marquette and Jesuit tradition.â€
In turn, Monarch, who had also served under Williams at the University of New Orleans during the 2006-07 season, according to Marquette, “when questioned, he (Monarch) provided misleading information about the matter multiple times, before eventually acknowledging his actions.â€
Additionally, Williams, 39, who has amassed a 96-44 record during his four seasons on the Marquette sidelines, divulged that he had accepted a one-game suspensionâ€"to be served for MU’s first Big East conference game during the 2012-13 campaignâ€"in “recognition of his duty to monitor the compliance of his staff,†according to school’s statement.
Furthermore, the program will have its official visits reduced for the next calendar year.
Athletic Director and Vice President Larry Williams said in the statement that the situation “reinforces the need to be focused not only on our rich competitive history but most importantly on the core values that underpin this very unique programâ€"among the elite in the nation.
“It was our obligation to take strong decisive steps as we took this matter extremely seriously. The NCAA has made the role of institutions quite clear in its proposed legislative changes to the penalty structure.â€
