The way Yovani Gallardo has been pitching lately, the Milwaukee Brewers may not need many runs if they're going to bounce back tonight against the Cincinnati Reds in the second of three straight meetings.
Gallardo has given up a total of two runs over his last 19 2/3 innings. He's gone 2-0 in three starts during that span, most recently shutting down the Pirates on Sunday. In that game, Gallardo had a career-high 14 strikeouts, which tied Moose Haas for the second-most in franchise history in one game.
Gallardo is 4-4 with a 4.95 ERA in 13 career starts against the Reds.
Bronson Arroyo will try to rebound from a rough start against the Diamondbacks on Monday, when he allowed eight hits and five runs in three innings of a 5-3 loss. That followed a three-hit shutout at San Diego on July 6.
For his career, Arroyo is 12-8 with a 3.70 ERA in 26 games (23 starts) against Milwaukee. The righty pitched 6 2/3 innings in a 6-1 win at Miller Park on May 7. On June 26, he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning but received a no- decision in the 4-3 victory.
Last night, Homer Bailey worked eight strong innings and the Reds hit three home runs in a 3-1 win. Bailey (9-6) allowed one run on six hits and did not walk a batter while tying his career high with 10 strikeouts to record his fourth straight win. Aroldis Chapman worked a scoreless ninth to secure his 16th save of the year.
"He was dealing today. He had great location with his fastball and late life on his slider that was hard to pick up," Reds manager Dusty Baker said about Bailey. "He wanted to go nine, but that was enough."
Zack Cozart, Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen each went deep for the Reds, who have won nine of their last 11 games.
Marco Estrada (0-4) surrendered all three runs on seven hits over seven innings to remain winless on the season. It was his 16th appearance and 10th start this year for Milwaukee, which had its two-game win streak snapped.
"He didn't have his command as well as he's had in the past, but I thought he still made good pitches and he still changed speeds well," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said about Estrada.
The Reds have won five of seven games between the teams in 2012, including two of three at Milwaukee in May and two of three in Cincinnati in June. The Brewers haven't won the season series since 2006.
