Zack Greinke, Brewers put extension talks on hold - SportingNews.com

The Milwaukee Brewers and righthander Zack Greinke have tabled discussions about a long-term contract extension.

"I talked with Casey Close (Greinke's agent) and we decided to let it rest for now," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "That doesn't mean we won't talk again at some point but we're going to let it rest right now."

The newspaper speculates talks might have broken down following the five-year, $112.5 million extension that righthander Matt Cain recently signed with the San Francisco Giants.

Greinke, 28, is in the final season of a four-year, $38 million extension he signed with the Kansas City Royals in 2009. He was dealt from the Royals to the Brewers in December of 2010.

In his first season with Milwaukee in 2011, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner went 16-6 with a 3.83 ERA in 28 starts.

In his first start this season, Greinke tossed seven shutout innings in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
