The Milwaukee Brewers reportedly announced Tuesday morning that starting pitcher Chris Narvesonâs should surgery was a success.
Brewers physician William Raasch was the person who performed the surgery to repair Narvesonâs labrum and rotator cuff in his left pitching shoulder. Narveson will now have approximately nine months of recovery time before he will be able to start pitching again. That means he will be rehabbing his shoulder until the beginning of February, which is right around the time pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Milwaukee placed Narveson on the 15-day disabled list Friday April 18, as they were unsure how significant the damage was to his shoulder. Marco Estrada has taken over for Narveson in the starting rotation. In two starts, he has posted a 0-1 record and given up five earned runs on nine hits in 11.0 innings pitched. It should also be noted that he has struck out 11 batters and only walked two in that span.
Narveson made significant strides last season in his first full year as a starter. Milwaukee has high hopes for him as they continue to build a strong pitching staff. In only two starts this season Narveson posted a 1-1 record with a 7.00 ERA, five strikeouts and four walks in 9.0 innings pitched. He surrendered eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in that span.
It is unfortunate what happened to Narveson, but the Brewers should count themselves lucky they have a reliable long-relief pitcher in Estrada who can step up and be a solid starter. Most teams would have to call up a starting pitcher from the minor leagues with the hopes of that player being able to deliver a similar performance. With Estrada, Milwaukee knows what they are getting because they saw what he could do last season in a very similar role.
Estrada is schedule to pitch next on Friday May 4 against the San Francisco Giants.
