The Milwaukee Brewers brought up six players from the minor leagues for their September call-ups. It will be interesting to see how each of these players will help their chances of making the team next season and how they can help the Brewers continue winning games this year.
Eric Farris was called up this past weekend from Triple-A Nashville. The 26-year-old second baseman batted .286 with seven home runs, 31 RBI, 21 doubles, one triple, and 27 walks in 528 plate appearances. Hopefully, Farris will get a chance to start at second base a couple games to give the fans a good idea of what the organization has behind Rickie Weeks.
Reliever Brandon Kintzler joined Milwaukee on Monday from Triple-A Nashville. Kintzler has played in 16 games in a Brewers uniform prior to the one inning he pitched Monday night against the Miami Marlins. He spent most of his time in Double-A Huntsville this season where he posted relatively good numbers. In 11 2/3 innings in Triple-A, he had a 1.54 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
Wily Peralta is the big name being called up as he is widely considered the Brewers No. 1 prospect. Peralta will be taking Mark Rogers spot in the starting rotation after the organization elected to shut him down for the season. Peralta did not fare well coming out of the bullpen in relief earlier this year for Milwaukee where he recorded a 9.00 ERA in one inning pitched. Hopefully, he can show off some of his great stuff in a starting role. He went 7-11 with a 4.66 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings at Triple-A Nashville.
Tyler Thornburg already made two starts with the Brewers, taking a no-decision in each, and three relief appearances already this year. He posted a 5.79 ERA in 14 innings while striking out nine batters. Milwaukee will most definitely give him some more starts before the end of the season to see what he is truly capable of accomplishing at the major league level. Thornburg has terrific stuff but must avoid surrendering hits and keeping runners off the base path if he ever wants to record his first win.
Logan Schafer is the only outfielder who was called up so there is a good chance he will make a couple starts. Schafer had an outstanding season in the minors last year but his production has fallen off in 2012. With three teams in 2011 he batted .315, including hitting .331 in 194 at-bats at Triple-A Nashville. This season he is batting .278 with 23 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 40 RBI, and 72 strikeouts.
The biggest surprise of all of the call-ups certainly has to be right-hand pitcher Josh Stinson from Double-A Huntsville. The 24-year-old Stinson had a record of 11-9 with a 3.16 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 145 1/3 innings this season. It is unknown if the Brewers will give Stinson a start considering they want to get a good look at Peralta, Thornburg, and keep Michael Fiers going strong. My guess is Stinson will make a few relief appearances out of the bullpen.
