Milwaukee Brewers power past Atlanta Braves 8-2 - Savannah Morning News

BREWERS 8, BRAVES 2

MILWAUKEE â€" Rickie Weeks blasted a three-run home run and Travis Ishikawa hit a bases-clearing double in Milwaukee’s eight-run fifth inning, and the Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 8-2 on Wednesday night.

Milwaukee (72-71) climbed above .500 for the first time since it was 4-3 on April 12.

The Brewers moved within three games of St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Despite the loss, the Braves continue to have a strong hold on the top wild card position.

Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo (15-8) pitched seven strong innings. He gave up two runs on only four hits while walking three and striking out six.

Atlanta starter Paul Maholm (12-10) gave up nine hits, eight runs â€" six earned â€" in 4 1/3 innings.

NATIONALS 2, METS 0

NEW YORK â€" John Lannan pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in his first start since replacing Stephen Strasburg in Washington’s starting rotation, and the Nationals lowered their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to six with a win over punchless New York.

Ryan Zimmerman homered in the fourth off rookie Matt Harvey (3-5) and Ian Desmond connected off Jon Rauch in the eighth, helping the Nationals complete a three-game sweep and close in on the capital’s first postseason baseball berth since the original Washington Senators in 1933.

PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 1

PHILADELPHIA â€" Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and Cliff Lee pitched seven strong innings to lead streaking Philadelphia to its seventh straight win.

The Phillies continued their late push for an NL wild-card spot with a three-game sweep of the Marlins. Up next for the Phillies, four games in Houston against the NL-worst Astros.

Philadelphia came in four games out of a playoff spot in the always-changing wild-card standings. The Phillies (72-71) are on a season-high winning streak and have won 15 of 19 to move over .500 for the first time since they were 28-27 on June 3.

Rollins hit a two-run homer off Josh Johnson (8-12) in the seventh for a 3-1 lead.

PADRES 3, CARDINALS 2

SAN DIEGO â€" Clayton Richard pitched seven strong innings and rookie Yasmani Grandal singled home the go-ahead run to lift San Diego over the St. Louis Cardinals, handing the slumping World Series champions their 11th loss in 15 games.

The Cardinals began the day with a one-game lead over Los Angeles for the second NL wild-card berth. The Dodgers, who played later at Arizona, host St. Louis in a crucial four-game series starting tonight.

St. Louis put a runner on third with one out in the ninth but was unable to score. World Series MVP David Freese and pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker both grounded out.

Logan Forsythe hit a solo home run for the Padres, who completed a three-game sweep of St. Louis for the first time since August 1995.

REDS 2, PIRATES 1

CINCINNATI â€" Homer Bailey pitched seven solid innings and Cincinnati came up with just enough offense to squeeze out a win over Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep of the Pirates.

The Reds (87-57) scored both of their runs on outs while moving 30 games over .500 for the first time since they were 96-66 on Oct. 3, 1999. They widened their lead in the NL Central over second-place St. Louis to 11 1/2 games.

Bailey (11-9) allowed six hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts to extend his career high in victories.

Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett (15-7) allowed five hits and two runs with two walks and eight strikeouts.

ORIOLES 3, RAYS 2

BALTIMORE â€" Manny Machado led off the ninth inning with a single and scored the winning run on a single by Nate McLouth, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay to retain a share of first place in the AL East.

Machado also made a key defensive play in the top of the ninth for the Orioles, who moved 18 games over .500 (80-62) for the first time since the end of the 1997 season.

MARINERS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO â€" Miguel Olivo hit a solo home run, Kevin Millwood won consecutive starts for the first time since May and Seattle beat Toronto.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 39th homer, a two-run drive into the second deck, but it wasn’t enough to keep Ricky Romero from losing his 13th straight decision.

YANKEES 5, RED SOX 4

BOSTON â€" Curtis Granderson hit two home runs, Robinson Cano also homered and New York beat Boston night to remain tied for first place in the AL East.

The Yankees finished the game without shortstop Derek Jeter, who left in the eighth after pulling up lame running out a double-play grounder to end the inning.

A day after Jacoby Ellsbury’s game-ending single dropped New York into a tie with Baltimore atop the division, the Yankees got all their runs on homers to remain there.

David Phelps (4-4), gave up one run on five hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five. Rafael Soriano got four outs for his 37th save, but not before allowing a solo homer to Jarrod Saltalamacchia to lead off the ninth, followed by a fly ball that left fielder Chris Dickerson caught at the base of the Green Monster.

RANGERS 5, INDIANS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas â€" Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre homered before each left the game with injuries, and Texas beat slumping Cleveland.

Hamilton didn’t take the field in the top of the eighth inning, and the Rangers announced just before the game ended that Hamilton was forced out because of left knee soreness.

Beltre hit a two-run homer in the first, his 13th in his last 20 games, before exiting the game in the fifth with a strained left shoulder.

Ryan Dempster (11-6) won his fifth straight start and improved to 6-1 since he was acquired by the Rangers on July 31.
